Fringe Fridays: Drawless Animation

Fringe Fridays (our nearly weekly look at animation and experimental video) seeks to inform, enlighten, entertain, and inspire. We don’t just want you to watch videos, we want you to make stuff happen. Today, we have something really special: Rob Schrab, the mad genius behind Monster House and co-creator of the Sarah Silverman Program, hosts Indy Mogul’s 4 Minute Film School. I could explain drawless animation (no, really, I could), but Rob does it way better.

It’s a much faster process than stop-motion, but still allows you to do some of the same things. Check out Indy Mogul for more home-brew video effects tips, and visit the behind-the-scenes playlist in our Animation Network.

Overdub + Video Game Character = Awesome Birthday Video

So, your friend’s birthday is coming up and you just don’t feel like buying a Hallmark card. And yes, sending an ecard just seems a bit lazy (since you really should have sent the Hallmark). What are you, you 21st century video-savvy netizen, going to do?

How about overdubbing an animation sequence from the video game Ace Attorney with your birthday wishes?

Yes, that just might work:

Seriously, I think this is pretty great. Oh, and Happy Birthday to Daniel and Rebel Vanguard, whoever you are. You have one creative friend.

Got Questions?

A lot has changed with the new Yahoo! Video. We listened to a lot of feedback, really. We received many, many emails with the subject lines like “get bigger and longer” and we listened to that and upped our file size to 150 megabytes and created a widescreen player. We kicked our transcoders up to 700kpbs, changed our page layout, added embeddable playlists, networks, and much more.

So, any questions about the new Yahoo! Video? Anything you’re dying to know? Please use the comment space below to ask-away. And feel free to make suggestions too.

Weird News Roundup

As usual, there are a lot of crazy things happening this week in the United States. Faithful Fido can now be cloned, so you never need to mourn when your beloved pet dies. Provocative PETA puts a girl in a cage and Burke Kenny proves that he has the best beard in the world, and the ladies love it!

What do you do when you find yourself driving drunk and breaking the law? You dial 911 and report yourself!

Symphony conductors don’t have to worry about outsourcing. They might just be replaced by robots.

Don’t let all this madness stress you out, because studies show that monkeys eat more junk food under pressure. To relieve your rat-race stress, just watch this raw footage of rare tiger clubs without a single boring talking head. Pure sweetness!

Nostalgia Fest: The Muppet Show

In conjunction with the release of the Muppet Show: Season 3 DVDs, Yahoo! TV got their hands on some great clips from the television classic. Take it away, Piggy:

BWE: Drive-By Snowballing

I love VH-1’s Best Week Ever. Not only do they use our player on their blog for posting clips from their show, but those clips are so good. And they save time, really. BWE brings you the best of trash television. Last week they treated us to a truly priceless Price is Right video. This week, we get a highlight completely embarrassing video from Judge Alex:

Ordinarily you’d have to watch thousands of hours of TV to happen upon these gems. But now, with Best Week Ever, you can just favorite their playlist, and watch the wonderful come rolling in.
