Yahoo! Video Awards 2008: Best Indie Music Video
The Fringe Fridays nominations continue with this, our last category: Best Indie Music Video. New technologies in video editing and the advent of video sites (like our own!) have enabled bands to create and distribute videos that rival those produced by multi-gazillion-dollar record companies. Here are six uber-indie groups who have created modern masterpieces of sound and vision.

Well I checked out all the videos, and they’re pretty good, but I feel like I’ve seen a lot of them before. The Terrene one is easily the best, because it’s vibrant, interesting, colourful, imaginative, dreamy… Trenchcoat is the only competition, it’s really slick, but it’s a bit boring.
Also, the music in the Terrene video is the best of all of them, by a country mile.

Yeah, I think this Trenchcoat song is really good…for college freshmen to listen to in 1997. Terrene is clearly the best video. There are a lot of really neat aspects to all the videos, but in the end most of them just seem to be a random collection of interesting images. None of them are able to hold my interest for more than the first 30 seconds or so, save for Terrene, which really seems to tell a full story.

@so crates: So what happens to all legitimate voters? Should their votes be deleted as well? There’s absolutely no proof of any member of Terrene ever asking for or even endorsing the use of proxies, so it wouldn’t make sense to remove them from the competition just because a few individuals might have chosen to use them. It’s not the band’s fault so there’s no way removing them from the poll would do any good.
What is at fault here is the sloppy multi-voting detection the poll is using, but then again, no online poll can be guaranteed to be 100% reliable. With the also crazy amount of votes Trenchcoat has, I wouldn’t be so sure they haven’t used any tricks such as those, voting from multiple computers, etc…

After listening to terrene I’m a new man. They’ve changed my life for the betterment of humankind. I know know more about myself now than I ever did before thanks to terrene. Trenchcoat on the other had made my life go into a damning despair in which I wanted to watch the world bleed and see small children hurt each other. Malice and suffering were all around me.
You don’t want to experience the same feelings I felt when watching trenchcoat. Go make the sensible, right decision and go vote for terrene, the peacemaker, not trenchcoat the group of suffering.

Terrene has not advocated using proxies at all. It was just a fan that made the suggestion, and the community has spoken against the idea (although some have said they used proxies…this isn’t really unexpected though and is the nature of online polls).

wow normally i would be against gaf and all of their gaf backwards ways, but after listening to terrene I have seen the error of my ways. terrene has taught me to love life and spread joy and happiness. before this, I browsed as anon and jacked off to pron on a certain site, but now, terrene has showed me the light. Wow, terrene’s music is just so inspiring. I listened to all of the selections this morning and then left to go register for a dual credit college-highschool program. On my way, all I could think of was the genre transcending techniques and rhythms used by terrene and their superb animation. After registering, it turns out I was accepted, no doubt thanks to the carity of mind that Terrene’s music gave me! Terrene is probably the most masterful indie band that has ever walked the Earth, and their superb mastery of the arts and sciences of music clearly trounce all other’s works.

Why is Terrene on the side of Good and Trenchcoat on the side of Evil? The great and mighty oracle, Google, provides the answers. Through his all-seeing eye, Google has bestowed upon me the visions of the hearts of the two rivaling bands and here are my conveyance of them unto you people of the wide sea known as the ‘Internet’.
First of all, Terrene is like an ‘inspired cuisine’ that is ‘much more than a name’. It is a ‘philosophy…[that is] economically sound and sustainable…[which] offers something new’. And that new offering from such blessed hands unto us is a new hope for this world. The love of Terrene for this world is so great that the Terrene Institute was erected in order to study and examine such a boundless love.

I then opened the eye of my heart and realized that Terrene, blessed be his name, still teaches his benevolent message of hope to the world has divinely-appointed me to share what I had just seen to the world.

In this case, Terrene is just being supported and backed by a community he’s a part of, and that’s what all of this is in the end. This is the internet, where exaggerated language and tricks reign, so it’s all completely fair play. Although I see nothing wrong in them, those are just 2 quotes you selected from threads supporting Terrene with over 700 responses in all, and many have really come to like and appreciate the song and the video, which in the ends makes it better for the indie music community. The exposure the bands are getting because of the voting is what’s important; in the end even Trenchcoat is getting something out of this.
Not to mention it’s not like Terrene’s video is easily comparable to Trenchcoat’s, as are both songs. This is far from being war, it’s just fun and about two communities supporting the option they believe is better; the fact that NeoGAF is waay bigger and not exactly music-centric is besides the point. We’re just here to show support for one of us.

@tc: I don’t think it’s intended in the context of this poll for us to have any kind of experience or previous knowledge of the band so we can “validate” our votes. At least I’m from Central America, not Seattle, so I can’t have possibly met them, but it was the existing connection through the community that both exposed me to their music and made me support them, be it because of pride in said community or because I did think both the video and song were superior to the other options. Even if it was because of the first, I see no reason why those votes should be any “less valid” either, since in the end both reasons exist because of the thought of supporting Terrene both as a band and a member of our community, a nice gesture that I must say has provided a considerable amount of entertainment.

All hilarities aside, I shall present my opinion on the two competing giants.
terrene’s is like a enchanting passage through a whimsical NES adventure that is reinterpreted into stunningly beautiful watercolor
TrenchcoaT’s is like a dive into a simplified reinterpretation of the 1950s with raw, gritty elements of regret and anger handed out like paper
Personally, I am more into game music as I am an avid gamer (note: I have no life, just kidding… or am I?) so I prefer terrene’s submission. I do like the 1950’s (EarthBound is cool, play it!), but I don’t like incessant rage and any cussing whatsoever in what I listen to.
I’m liking what I’m hearing here, I think I will give the other bands a try.

The Terrene video is rather okay. But didn’t Wacko Jacko do that like 15 years ago! So the Terrene clip is OK, But man the Trenchcoat clip has a VIBE!! It cathces the song better than the Terrene Micheal Jackson rip off (although nicely done).

Hey Everyone,
It’s great that we’ve gotten such a great response to the Yahoo! Video Awards. Really, all of our nominees are pretty amazing. Cutting out cardboard figures and animating them is pretty cool, and so is creating a story with motion graphics and green screen. Making a video out of thousands of photographs is a huge undertaking, and is perfect for Collin’s song. Tim’s storybook world is beautifully realized and moving. The wit and animation of the Rogue Gnome is completely charming. And the Go! Team’s editing is video-editing at its finest.
I believe in all of these videos. It’s great to see fans being so supportive. It’s not so great to see expletives and allegations of ballot box stuffing. Contests have to have winners and internet voting is not an exact science. All of our creators deserve to be admired for their hard work.

too bad this became a: “GAF owns teh world” voting. It’s like calling geenstijl.nl for winning the quote (they made doritos use their sitename as name of their chips, by killing internet votes. They did alot more on internet votes, name means: “no style”). Sure some may like the vid they voted but most GAF just voted terrence because it is their community. You can read it at their forum, where they are yelling: “GAF vs NL, BEAT EM”. Really the idea of this voting aye :).
